Directorate of Graduate Studies Research and Enterprise (DGSRE)
The Uganda Martyrs University’s DGSRE was began in 2000 with two Programmes, namely, Master of Development Studies and Master of Business Administration. Later, in 2003, the School of Postgraduate Studies was established, with the mandate to oversee postgraduate studies at the university, which had by that time, grown from two to four programmes. Prof. Deirdre Carabine was appointed and she became the first -founding Director of the school. In August 2015, the School of Postgraduate Studies was merged with the Directorate of Research and it became the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research (SPGSR), with the mandate to oversee Postgraduate Studies, Research and Publications. This mandate was implemented in collaboration with the Faculties of Education, Business Administration and Management, Agriculture, Built Environment, Science, and Health Science and, Mother Kevin Post Graduate Medical School, School of Arts and Social Sciences and, the Institutes of, Ethics, languages and Communication Studies. In 2022 however, the UMU restructured and turned SPGSR into the its current, Directorate of Graduate Studies, Research and Enterprise. . . Our vision is to become an efficient, first choice school of graduate studies research and enterprise, offering quality, local, national, regional and global problem solving academic programmes.
Our mission is to produce internationally reputable professionals having efficiently acquired quality training in skills and knowledge.
To enable our graduate students to acquire knowledge, skills, expertise and exposure; and timely graduate from their degree programmes through efficient and quality teaching, learning aid, innovations and enterprise with the university.

- Ensure students that enroll and fully comply with all financial obligations for their study programmes are given timely, adequate academic services and they complete their studies within the minimum duration set for the programme.
- Ensure UMU graduate students participate and take lead in research, innovations and publications and realise a minimum of at least two publications on innovations within the duration of their studies with UMU.
- Ensure teaching and learning approaches at UMU, meet contemporary national, regional and international standards.
- Ensure the Research and Innovations of our student and staff yield solutions to community, national, regional and international development needs.
- Ensure our students and staff are exposed to relevant technological, scientific and policy developments taking place and courage collaboration and communication among like-minded associations/organisations in Uganda and with the international scientific community as a whole.
- Build partnership with industry for joint Research and Innovation: e.g Enterprise Uganda, Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), The Uganda Association of Private Vocational Institutions (UGAPRIVI), Centenary Bank, Ministry of Trade, Industries and Cooperatives.
- Collaborate with Deans to ensure appropriate curriculum, time table, teaching and learning aids are efficiently and in a timely manner used in UMU graduate school teaching, learning and research programmes .
- Convene outreach events that disseminate information about graduate programmes and research of UMU and attract students to and give the university visibility, at the local, national, regional and international levels.
- Develop and implement projects in line with the UMU vision and Mission.
- Provide oversight to ensure graduate students are given quality timely teaching, learning services prescribed in their degree programmes following the university policies and standards and in line with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) policies and guidelines and, acceptable national, regional and international standards for graduate school.
- Provide oversight and ensure graduate student’s research, innovations and publications meet not only UMU procedures and processes but also the NCHE, and other national, regional and international standards.
- Provide oversight and ensure teaching and learning approaches at UMU, meet contemporary national, regional and international standards for graduate school.
- Identify and ensure participation and collaboration of graduate staff and students in relevant technological, scientific and policy development fora and with relevant institutions, locally, nationally, regionally and internationally.
- Identify and build relevant partnership with industry, academia, government and nongovernmental organizations for furthering Research and Innovation of staff and graduate students of UMU.
- Ensure and contribute to graduate students’ timely graduation through efficient and timely clearance of the student for graduation, preparation of the transcripts and certificates.
- Developing projects/fundraising for financial wellbeing of the university
